Sex Safe and Fun is for people with a disability and their carers. It has a booklet with pictures that give information about good sex and bad sex. It comes with a Reader’s Guide that helps carers to talk about the pictures and the key messages. The language is simple and direct.
There are important messages about good sex including consent, enjoyment, intimacy, privacy and safety.
These are presented in contrast to bad sex. Bad sex is used to describe behaviours and activities that are unsafe, wrong (i.e. generally not socially tolerated), and in some cases against the law.
Family members, staff in Day Programmes, Group Homes and other care settings who have little or no experience in providing information about sexuality may find the guide helpful. Together with the suggested resources it gives ready access to simple and accurate information on the issues of safe sex, and responsible and acceptable sexual behaviour.
This resource is not just for people with a disability. It can be used by anyone who likes learning through pictures and discussion.
More that 5,000 copies of Sex Safe and Fun have been distributed since its publication 3 years ago. Family members, carers and people with a disability have been very impressed with the resource.
